Newsletter changes

I like this new format, but I'm changing backends. My new email provider (ConvertKit) has more options. As I learn about these, they'll making some format changes.

As in last week, there are still ads at the top and some sort of Call to Action at the bottom.

I like to give you a great deal of useful materials right at the get go. And so many of you love the farm pictures, especially the animals. While I probably should add some section about goal achievement and affirmations.

Do respond to this and tell me your druthers.

Writing in Public - This Journey Begins

Harlan Ellison infrequently wrote in public.

Behind the glass front windows. Often in bookstores. Occasionally in a library.

He hunt-and-pecked his short story out on a Remington typewriter. Immaculately, without corrections. Exactly typeset.

Each page was posted on the glass window nearby at the store's front, so passerby's could read and follow along. Just before the store's closing, the story complete, Ellison would read it aloud to the audience.

We should all write in public. Given an idea, we do the research and then write for all to see.

This then enables our small or large audience to see what we are doing as we do it.

So here I am, announcing my next book will be written on LinkedIn and Twitter. Front to finish. I estimate a 50,000 word paperback can be produced in half a year. 200 pages. 3,000 characters per post, 6 posts a week.

And meanwhile, I keep my day job of running a working cattle-farm in Missouri.

Why? To build an audience from scratch. To get their feedback as I go on the book I'm writing - to write a book just for them.

Who I'm writing for are content entrepreneurs who are building their own business based on sharing their expertise. Those who consider that they can harvest the wisdom they've cultivated over their years - to help people coming along on that journey just behind.

What I'll be writing about is this journey itself. How do you start, only with what you know. Building an audience by attracting them through your content. Finding what they need as you go, and creating products they need and want from that feedback. Earning more income by building an additional income stream.

Many have done this. In private. It's now my turn. In public.

My finished pages will be posted on my newsletter.

...Well, those are the plans, anyway. And as the old phrase goes - "Man plans, while God laughs."

Still, I'm finding that I am writing this book by revising my earlier works and consolidating them into a single volume. Right now, we're just working through the material on the nuts and bolts of writing, publishing, and book marketing. All out of that Really Simple Writing and Publishing series.

It will be a lot clearer.

And yes, all these sections are posted on LinkedIn and Twitter, so if you want to follow me there, you'll see these sections published on some sort of queue. Maybe I'll set them up to come out at noon or midnight, or something regular - maybe 5am.

The newsletter should be a compiled set of these sections, which are going to be disjointed and not in final order - but the tips are all true and all useful. So I should have five sections and then a newsletter on Thurs. (Why five? Because that's how LinkedIn likes it.)

Same old problem - I'm too prolific to fit the existing models. (Sigh.)

I'll probably get ahead of myself and post more to Twitter as threads. And I want to bring back my fiction works in short-form versions - serialized. But that is another project. Still working this out.

Farm News

New Calves - still that time of the year...

All darling. sixteen total now, here's number seven:

Another of our many black white-faced critters this year for your namerator. A bull calf. Her mother is Gladys. (That story is as she was one of four all-black calves born to our Galloway bull that year. Her full name is Gladys Knight - and you may figure out what the three bull calves were called..)

That calf does have a white-tipped tail, but all black feet. One of his eyes is black around the edges, and the other completely white.

If your namerator has a great inspired idea for this baby girl, just let me know...

Tiny Home Progress

Mowed the new location this week. And we checked it a couple of times to see how the shade was. The breeze across the pond was marvelous. So we "only" have to box things up that could fall off the shelves, dissemble the deck extension, first moving all the container plants, table, and umbrella. Then hook up the tractor (more maneuverable than the truck) and park it in position, level it, hook up the electrical...

Yes, wow.

Other Farm News

A couple more beef are going to be processed this week. Bittersweet, but necessary. And late July, the bulls get their respective harems.

We have two older cows and two heifers still to have their calves, but will probably go to market, because when they are this late, it means they aren't as fertile as the rest. And we have to make room for next year's heifers as we continue to improve our genetics. (Sigh.)

But the trick is to realize they are employees, not pets. (Even though you don't usually back-scratch your employees...)
