Restoring the Land

I'm transitioning the cows to grass pastures now and off their hay.

All that green grass out there still isn't quite long enough to eat - although they come back to the bales to fill up.

This transitioning starts happening on our farm about the middle or end of March, depending on how fast it warms up. The ground temperature needs to be around 38 degrees (F) or more. Fescue (a common non-native grass here in Missouri) really thrives between 70 -90 degrees (F), and loves our humid climate (humid due to rainfall and heat). Fescue also stays green most of the winter, so is good forage (no, the cows don't eat it first, they prefer clover and fine grasses, such as bluegrass).

Yesterday, I put them on the last of their bales, which means they ate about 35 bales this winter. That's down from the 70 I fed last winter, so their overhead costs continues to drop with my management. By rotating my cows through pastures subdivided into paddocks, the grass is able to re-grow as it's rested - and so I can "stockpile" grass well into February (depending on heavy snows they can't paw through). So, the better I work at this, the longer that hay lasts.

With all the current banking mess, it seems a good time to put in a bigger garden this year. Our old tiller gave up the ghost (seized, carburetor clogged - thanks to ethanol) so we shelled out for a brand new motor. Now we just have to fence our cows out with semi-permanent galvanized wire panels and steel t-bar posts, then plan it out for efficient production. Some of it will be containerized. Everything else will be in the ground.

Tiny Home Progress

The Spring weather has me working at various things. The cold weather kept me inside last weekend, where I caught up on other duties (new videos). Then the consistent rain again kept me inside again, mostly. When my fiancee is here, we are living in the cottage constantly, so that is really testing the electrical (her cooking is marvelous).

What I did get done was extending the front porch to cover the hitch, an opportunity to expand everything another four feet - and so creating enough space to have a "summer kitchen". We found the heat from cooking quickly warms up the inside areas, and predicts a hot summer with no cool-down really possible. (Why we had the hitch out front was because I failed to specify to the Amish crew which end to start from. So the house wound up looking like one of their buggies - where the horses are hitched in front. (Instead of having the big blank end wall being towed down the road and avoiding rock and bird strikes.)

I also found myself needing to install a larger hot water heater in the main house, as its arrangement of having two independent small ones doesn't really work with being able to wash your hair as well as the rest of you without having to wait for the water to get hot again... The tiny home has no shower, so the main house is the go-to resource.

Yes, that was the key point. Oddly enough, I discussed this organizational setup the year prior in a short story, "Death by Marketing". That story was written before I got started on the big cottage, but after the still-upcoming mini-office shell was acquired. It's prescient in a lot of ways...

New Projects Upcoming - "The Expectancy Factor"

I told you about my research into Bristol's "Magic of Believing". The boil-down into that Field Guide brought an intense look at how goal achievement works and how the world revolves around what we expect it to be.

Added to that is the element of the "news" and our entertainment sources constantly bombarding us with what they think we should be behaving like - and even believing. Only the tiny few dedicated entrepreneurs who remain tightly focused on what they are doing with their life here - only these are somehow relative immune from the swamping influence of our ever present reporting and advertising.

MOB itself also explains why Think and Grow Rich was such a success.

This tend to align my decades of research into a single pattern. I'm sitting on several gold mines. Electing to use the term "expect (expectancy, expectation) brings this all into a modern marketing format, where it's obvious that what we believe is how things work - so all we have to do is it put some more "oomph" behind what we believe and expect to remarkably improve our lives for the better.

This is going to be written on the fly, and housed as a Project (membership framework) so I can build it as I align things. Eventually, it will come out as a book, and a course, and so on - but finding and building the audience for this is a better sequence.

Right now, I'm getting some videos made - there will be about a dozed - which lay out how all this works. For now, I'm working on a "TED Talk" essay, which will create an 18-minute video (or split into a couple of 9-minute or perhaps four 4 1/2 minute videos) that lay out the entire scene.

This is the current model I use - take your theme, validate that idea (preferably with market research) then crate the cover and follow that with a TED talk video that is persuasive and concise. From that, you'll have material for a blurb and all the marketing you want to do. The chapters get made into videos, as well as the supplementary content. And after about 6 months of releasing these videos and other promotion, you should have an audience that will enable a successful launch as you've honed down your marketing (keywords and phrases) to a fine edge.
