[Readers Update] An eight-month experiment nearly complete - and yet muses haunt me...

No way to expect this major shift would happen like this...

Hi,

Thanks for reading this.

And if you got this in your email and don't feel you need these anymore, please unsubscribe below.

  • Cows, calves, and bulls are just fine, and thank you.
  • I didn't think I'd be away from writing this long.
  • Bet you don't have all the books in your library that I'm giving away free...

Farm News

Pop quiz: how many heifers can you name?

There's five here: Skully, Blanche, Jeanette, Splatter, and Rightie. The rest are bull calves. (Answer to this quiz is far below.)

Really, only the heifers get well-known by their names. Particularly when we only had six out of 18. (The one not pictured is "Long Eyes".)

Our current plan is to get all the heifers "settled" and then pick the best, then sell all but the best five. Last year we had 9 of them, who are keeping the bull happy, but our of this years crop, we'll keep them all. People like to add heifers to their herd that are already to have their first calf in the spring. The highest prices are paid for those who are about to have their second calf - but we seldom sell those, just for that reason: too valuable.

The idea in theory is that with five productive heifers saved back each year, we can replace the whole 20-cow herd in five years if we needed to. (But the older ones look with me with their "mooving" eyes, and I really can't part with them until they somehow quit producing calves for some reason.)

My 8-Month Experiment

I was not expecting things to take this long. My hiatus from writing. It was supposed to last maybe six months, max.

The bigger point is what to do with all these books and this ability to write at will? Fiction doesn't sell unless you're promoting it. Non-fiction does. Sure, it would sell better if I promoted it more. I have these couple hundred fiction books out there, after those three years of steady writing.

What's the point of bringing all these stories into existence if they are hardly being read?

But I hate advertising just for advertising's sake.

However, there is a plan to follow a book called "Content Inc." by Joe Pulizzi - which lays out the general plan for simply getting a lot of content out there, which then gets followers and so on. In my case, I'd swap over to creating weekly videos, which are more popular than just wordage.

And I've got everything there to execute that plan.

The trick is that my time is very tight right now. That romance research lead me into getting that tiny house done, which itself was originally a way I could streamline my living arrangements and get rid of a lot of distractive clutter. But it also became a way to help my "research partner" be able to spend more time with me here on this farm.

The tiny home is nearly done, and after that is getting the mini-office (an earlier tiny home construct) finished up and outfitted so I can work out of this. Those two total about what this wing of the old farmstead house has. But the process of weeding out what I want to store where (and taking only stuff I'll actually use) is the way to diet things down.

But more interesting is the minor revolt I'm having among my muses, where they are telling me I need to get busy producing books or videos or pretty much anything. At that point, I simply have to knuckle down on getting those two tiny homes finished, as then I'll be able to simply wrap up stuff.

It's not that I don't have other stuff to fix on the farm. Lots of fence posts need replacing, along with gates and tightening existing wire. Plus other renovations to do. Like the barn roof. Like the room I'm currently living out of that needs to be upgraded to become a suite of two bedrooms so that we can have overnight, weekend, and summer visitors - and so encourage relatives to consider the idea of moving out to the farm just as I did 20+ years ago. And so, I could train them to take over the work I'm doing to keep things going around here.

Of course, you'll probably hear more about my mystery "romance research partner" soon. Especially once I'm able to get back to having more First Reader work for her to help me with. Which again depends on keeping the tiny home progress moving.

Which puts off new books, videos, and whatnot.

For now, I just keep you updated...

What's Ahead?

Summer fruit

Right now, we've had our first batch of wild plums show up. Makes delicious jam.

And I'm experimenting with making vinegar drinks that don't need refrigeration.

Soon these will be followed by paw-paws and persimmons. But those will be in the fall.

Other fruit coming along are domestic and wild apples, as well as "wild" pears (that escaped cultivation and are spread by birds - so when do we get to call them wild? Probably some research into Johnny Appleseed is in order....

Oh - wait, there's more: Recent life-test results continue to confirm all I've been telling (some of) you for years - you can actually have and be anything and everything you want out of life. Really. Whether it's finding a dear companion or a million-dollar salary. And it's all in that "Strangest Secret Collection" (my characters named it the "decoder ring"). You only have to take the leap of faith and put it into use...

(Again, to get your updated copy, just reply to this and ask - I'll send you the most recent edition if you don't have yours or misplaced it.) As well, I do need to get some courses up, so I'll start working these in once I get all the major non-fiction books republished.

Become a First Reader

First readers have now become collaborators. And get the first inklings of a story before anyone else except me. (They also get immediate notification and pictures of new calves.) Our interactions are what result in the Notes editions for each book. It's simple to become one - just raise your hand.

How to Raise Your Hand: Join the no-cost Insider's Club and then send me an email that you have. Tell me what you bring to the table. If you make a good case, I'll include you on my First Reader Emails.

Expect great things over the next year - and continuing...

Yes, a huge number of books are available in that Insiders Club. I don't think that most of you have most of these books - and so I keep this in every week to remind you that some of these stories would really appreciate your reading them.

Thanks again for opening this. And reading these books.

And leaving a rating on the Living Sensical site for the stuff you buy there.

As well as leaving recommendations on Bookbub in addition to reviews anywhere else.

You know, that "paying it forward" kinda thing.

Do keep sharing these books with your friends, too.

I hope your life is not too interesting to be overwhelming, but sufficiently engaging to keep you amused. (Like some of us here...)

Robert

PS. Again, you can always email me about anything.

PPS. Pop quiz answer: ignore the three laying down on the left, they are all bull-calves. In order from top left to right, and including those laying down on the right: Rightie, Splatter, Skully, Blanche, Jeanette. Again, Long Eyes isn't pictured.

What you're here for is to enjoy life. If you're not enjoying every single moment, then you're working too hard at living. Relax. Let go. Follow your bliss.
